Hellana 2017

Hellana is one of the most important wargame convention in Italy. I go there almost every year since 2004. And as Ganesha Games we have one or more tables where to present new games and to distribute our stuff. What to say more? Look at tables, games and miniatures. At the end new Mirlinton production.

Lucca C&G 2015: statuettes [part9]

These last posts are more involved in reviews about particular aspects of elements present in Lucca. There were so many things that every kind of report lacks always something. I’m reporting things near to the miniatures world, but I could speak only about comics, or living roleplay, or videogames, or tournaments. Reports slant of these posts is more related to things that stroke me. I didn’t took photos about all, and most of what is here were picked fast around. I had to be at my stand for demonstrate wargames. However I took some pauses. And these are things related to statuettes. As these heroes of my first years of life.

So many pieces around. And so many vendors of these things.

Collectors are males for the most, I think. So female statuettes are very frequent. Even sexy ones.

Some time ago I was thinking about some naval game in the space with vessels from anime. It is could be very interesting.

Since a couple of years you can find these dolls everywhere. In my opinion they are too much big to collect easily. Moreover they are infinite, with multiple and limited editions for the same character. Only for Flash I found 7 different pieces. As advantage I can say that you can found so many characters kinds from films, tv or comics that is impossible not to find something that you want. Doctor Who series is only one of the latest ones.

And now a more canonic 28mm miniature. It was in painting contest, the same where Bosio won 4 prizes. I like this one so much for the supreme colour use that emulate two different lights and different temperature.

Empoli Wargame 2015 (pt.1)

Back to 3rd and 4th of October. After Romics we rested one day. Then on car toward Empoli for one of the best Italian wargame conventions. This was the first time for me. Two days of fun. The place is huge and it is inside the local fair palace. Empoli is a sort of part of Florence’s economic area. As hotel a budget place in a near town specialised in ceramic. But now a speed review of the tables.

A club of young people prepared games for younger people. Patience, creativity and great things.

A boardgame-wargame extended to bigger dimensions. And dinosaurs. That cannot be small. Note children around. Spreading the disease…

Always simple games but for older people than children.

Playing with 6mm on a map. Captivating. But abuse of hand lens to understand who is killing who.

Salini and his crusade for a new Italian tournament standard adopting “L’Art de la Guerre”. Maybe the new sensation for DBA, DBM, DBMM, FOG orphans?

Di Bartolo and his Napoleonic dream. He use an abacus for malus and bonus, and this sometime isn’t a bad idea. And his soldiers are always the best.

Naval war with big sailing ship. This deserve an applause.

Urban fight in WWII. I like these things a lot. And I want to replicate them with my Flyton scenario. What is it? It is one project of mine that I frozen in the last years. You can find traces on this blog. Now with the new house and new spaces to put scenario elements I can build my little city.

A wild western town and its leisure facilities.

Frogs versus turtles. An epic struggle.

More canonic fight. Did I never transpire that I love Romans?

The convention was originally a modelling convention. But now wargames are really dominant. However something remains, as static modelling and railway modelling. Here some wagons as we know it (dirty and shabby). And than a near station in a big diorama.

On the next post more on Empoli.

DBA tournament in Rome

Back to the 26th of September. Still t-shirts around, as DBA, in the 3 edition version. A tournament was held in Rome, the first and maybe the last with this rules version.

We waited for this new edition since a lot of years. Its publication was a thing that never happened. And DBA was lacking interest between players.

Rules modification proposals were around for years. So the new edition displease almost everyone because everyone had his personal ideas how to fix and improve the game. And the new edition was something other than so many people wanted.

It is impossible to create 1000 different rules for 1000 different people. And what was created was not so intriguing to placate unhappiness. Someone found in the rules new inspiration but more people that were dissatisfied now are looking for something else. We played DBA tournaments since 2003, so if people want something different, the new edition, with its usual hermetic language, was the decisive event.

We were in Solo Giochi shop:
http://www.solo-giochi.it/
And this is the mini-website that I made for the event:
http://www.legiopalatina.it/lopapaveronovoconclave/index.htm

Some western building to play with Torriani rules.

A commission work for a WWII set. Still unpainted.

This incredible set is modular, so new parts could be added. And you can play in sewers and cellars because there is an underground level with parts that are connected too.

Some 28mm minatures painted by the owner of Solo Giochi. He sells them. It think that the ancient ones are really great.

I didn’t play in the tournament. With old edition tournaments I could choose an army (usually a Roman one…) and play without review rules. I hadn’t patience and free time to study new rules. But I wanted to be with my friends at the tournament, so I bring something else with me.

Another try for venationes and an opportunity to show my book to customers that were in the shop. 3 copies sold.

If it could be the last official DBA tournament in Roma however it was not a funeral. We had a lot of fun. DBA is what created our friendship. No more official DBA tournaments here in Rome? We can always play with DBA, play with other games, and meet for our common passion about wargaming. It is not a matter of rules but only of free time.

Romagioca 2015

Back to September! A lot of things to do and so I’m late with reports of past events scheduling. Let’s begin with this game convention in Roma, the 20th of September.

T-shirts, hot weather (but rainy) and wargames in a sporting centre. All was mainly under a pavilion but other tables were around. Roman people is very individualistic so it’s almost impossible to organise something larger. However you could find a lot of people involved in local wargaming scene. Even from our region as this naval table from Latina.

Some local shops were present too. But not their customers. Not so great advertising for the event, as usual. Advertising means money and energy to spend, but without it means no people around. People organise events but doesn’t work on them properly. It is a matter of time and resources. Of mind too. However it is all volunteering work, so we must praise them in spite of everything. The problem for who is in the commercial side of wargaming and gaming is that everyone thinks to his garden and none thinks to spread garden culture. Events like this one must be the arrival of a common path, not a extemporaneous moment.

Children are the resource for the future of wargame, or what wargame will be in the future. Easy games were run for this. Great!

More table around.

The Gundam club and a wargame with mobile suits. I have to find time to try it. This club is very involved in spreading Gundam culture. They participate to translation and adaptation of Gundam manga and anime in Italy.

Boardgame space run by Reindeers club. I think that adding boardgames players at this event would be a great thing. Wargame and boardgame are two different things but they are always “-game” with people who can enjoy both.

Soldiers on ploughed camp.

Lego wargaming is something to explore more!

Our Ganesha Games tables.

Fungi scenario to try.

The first preview of new rules about venationes. Ferrum et Gloria development still run!

What for next year? I hope still this convention and more. Rome is a big city and I wish it as a great city for wargaming.

Grey Aliens by Ganesha Games (almost)

A new kickstarter by Ganesha Games! Ops, I’m wrong, it is by Crossover Miniatures, an old mate of Ganesha Games. He produces 28mm superheroes miniatures and now he is realising another subject: aliens. They are small Greys and other are of insectoid kind. Moreover there are some human military squads that fight aliens.

Why are we speaking about Ganesha Games? Because together with the miniatures there are rules to play with them, that uses “Song of” engine applied to modern combat. So it is easy to learn if you know other games. Added to the engine you find specific features for the scenario and hidden alien movement with “ghost counters”. Campaign rules are supplied for longer games. To play you can use even other miniatures, because the game is not based only for this miniature line but you can use what you want. As in every Gamesha Games game.

The project has reached the money amount to start. Now it is time to pledge for more. It ends Sat, May 30. To know more go to:

Stone walls by Stronghold

Mainly I speak about gladiators and fairs. This time I want to show something about other wargame stuff of mine: resin stone walls. The best around.

The attention to painting soldiers have to be employed for terrain too. Instead terrain in wargames is subsidiary to miniatures, so soldiers usually fight on a flat surface, green coloured. Some small trees simulate woods, broken houses are randomly scattered around. We have to invest our time and money on terrain. The only complication is the space required to store terrain, less flexible than the necessary space to store miniatures. I’m still building my city for wargames. Space is what I need. Rather than large buildings I dedicated my attention to walls, that are a vertical obstacle on the battleground. I chose those ones by Stronghold, a small Germany company.

A friend of mine brought me these colours with earth tones. They are pastels with watercolour feature. I and my father draw every stone of the walls with a random effect. The result look a bit too heavy as contrast.

Then I washed all with my personal magic wash paint, obtained by acrylic wax for parquet, matt acrylic paint and chestnut ink. Due to watercolour feature, the coloured dusts melted. Moreover the paint amalgam them with surface. So the contrast was attenuate. Every stone has its characteristic tone, but all look realistic.

A photo with a RSI Folgore soldier with his camouflage uniform. You can look at painted walls and their available variants: a destroyed wall with broken and deformed railing; a gate with moving doors with a curved shape. However this railing with upper points is awesome. And absolutely not boring.

I like these walls so much that I bought a long circuit of them. Their modular system allow walls to be composed in various ways. I’m sure that they are a nice touch to my battleground. And now I stored them inside a old rigid plastic case for video beta tapes. It’s not this on the photo, it’s a very compact box.
If you want similar walls go to Stronghold shop.

Lucca C&G 2014: walk around [part2]

I was a guest of the event so I had to stay at the stand for demonstrations, so I couldn’t walk around for my interests. But on 4 days and 10 hours a day I found some time to visit some things around, even if I lost cinemas, exhibitions, events, thematic pavilions and all these highlights of Lucca C&G. At least I visited the main areas.

This year the Japan area exploded from a “palace” to a “town”. Here you can find more things Japan relate, as food. And weird karaoke contests in Japanese language!

This area is the best for peculiar gifts.

Near the “town”, a church house some exhibitions.

You could find a lot of strange plushes…

…or unicorn and dragon meat, together with a cheering bust of one of the famous Giger creations.

More things to put in your living room.

Star Wars pavilion. A villa was only for Assassin Creed.

T-shirts too. And “Sith Happens”.

Shopping bags with peculiar character.

The helmet maker with newer stuff, in a crossover style.

When radical ideology is a dream and capitalism fails… The political movement for a return to feudal style of life.

But how to embrace feudalism? Easy, buy your personal armour!

Back in the games pavilion. This is the rear side with loos, under the walls.

The card game that simulate an activity as whores manager. A must have!

Illustrators in the making of painting for the final charity auction.

One of the computers in the fair. Note the video card and the huge cpu heat sink.

A miniature to play with “Harder than Steel” by Ganesha Games. More news about it in 2015…

Every year some new miniature for the gladiatorial dwarf squad for Blood Bowl by Cosimo Auricchio.

Lucca Comics & Games was not only this! Here there is only a small fraction of the entire. However I have other 7 posts about other things that you could find in Lucca, one each day. Follow me.
