Doughnut

A long time ago Fabio “TB Line” from Bologna sent me this image about something on his computer. Was he projecting a doughnut with CAD programme, he wasn’t?

The real story is that Fabio promised me an arena made of polystyrene for my gladiators. He is the wizard of polystyrene, you know. In the first instance he was thinking about a theatre, then he realised that gladiators fought in an amphitheatre! So he took a photo of the Coliseum and wanted to replicate it, in 28mm scale!!! When I explain to him that I don’t own a home where storage a 1 metre high polystyrene block, he thought to something more realistic in size to play with miniatures. He studied the matter considering stairs, water conducts, underground backstage, terraces, trapdoors, ways, sunshade, empire stand. With a modular approach this arena have to be divided in parts, so that its storage and transport was easy and detailed and internal parts could be built. A great project with a lot of building elements to assemble. Too great, indeed. So he postponed its realisation day after day, week after week, month after month. I thought to his life, with a wife, two little girls, a ruleset, a 10mm miniature company, and his real job. Then I decided it would be better if the arena was built directly by me in a more unpretentious form.

As result of Fabio involvement in the project I have got only this photo of the CAD design: an electronic doughnut. And his friendship. He is a good guy.

When I wrote these lines and prepared this post was 12 years ago. Fabio is still one of my friends and I’m still involved in gladiators in games. Things to do are time burning and even this blog suffer for this. Today, while I are sitting around at home with scarce will to do important things, I found my old blog. Maybe it was time to publish posts that I almost prepared for the blog. So, it is the time. Every Sunday a new (old) post until I have them. And if you want to find what I’m doing there is my Instagram. The blog was better but I cannot edit it anymore. See you in the next posts!

Playtests

Some images of domestic playing sessions to playtest games by Ganesha Games, almost the only situation to play something. Here below Hexenhammer.

4 against darkness, but against a man-tiger.

Some game pieces by Narciso.

Hexenhammer again. I played almost 20 games until now.

Playtesting pizza.

Sellswords in a post-apocalyptical version made for Lucca Comics & Games, maybe even for you a day or another.

A grey alien hunt scenario for Palaeo Diet Ice Age.

More playtest in future posts…

Reunion, comics, Terni and Canino

Some different things under one post.

Another visit to Terni in Antani comicbook store. Palumbo was here again then he sketched for the public.

The day after we went to visit Narciso at his home in Canino. He is one of the members of our old club Legio Palatina. In the meantime a marathon was held under the windows of it. A little bit noisy is living next to the finish line. However we playtested SellSwords, eat pizza, and then playtested Palaeo Diet. No, pizza is not an allowed food in the Palaeo Diet.

Play 2018: our games

But what we did here? If it’s name is Play, then we played a lot.

Together with some mates of mine from Rome I tried some games as this confused one about pirates. I arrived at the 2nd place on 5 players even if I didn’t understand all the rules.

A game about our feelings and what others know about them. Played by a bunch of rude mates. Fun.

Tex Willer is an Italian western comic. I remember that when I was a child I played with another game based on Tex. This one it’s not so memorable.

Public playtest for a futuristic race game. Futuristic issue, I think.

Memoir ’44 in Normandy. A simple game with strategy. I destroyed the invaders. Next please.

An area was dedicated to 2D wargames. I tasted the water of 3 solitaire games about bombing Germany in WWII. At the end I bought a solitaire game about defending Germany from bombers in WWII. A different view.

While I was playing around, watching gladiators, visiting stands, speaking with friends and all this kinds of occupations, Andrea was mastering a Brazilian roleplay game that he translated in Italian. And in the free time playtested the witch hunt. Moreover he felt bad and vomited in the toilet. But those is another story. However, after Lucca Comics & Games, Play Modena is the annual appointment that I don’t want to miss anymore.

Play 2018: gladiators

Some live role players were around Play Modena. But the really great thing was to watch some gladiatorial fights by local Ars Dimicandi section. Moreover I follow a lesson on Medieval knife combat, with kinds of move, countermove and counter-counter move. I was distracted by other things so I couldn’t stay here to watch all, damn! I want to live more living history combat experiences.

Autori In Gioco 2018

Playtests are the only form of games that I play. Here while we are testing dungeons for miniatures.

The card game about missing cats with its luxury original artwork.

And now a convention only for people who wants to show their games to propose them to editors and to playtesters. In this order. It was located inside a sort of hospice with a section for people who suffers of Alzheimer. On the other side of the road the Italian centre of secret services. Yes, it is weird. However some games were weird too.

And here to hunt some witches.

An original idea from some friend of ours. I hope to see this game published when it will be developed in its final form.

More weirdness in the coatroom: Christ of the crutches.

This year as Ganesha Games in Lucca Comics & Games we were three: I came from Rome, Andrea came from Terni, Damon came from Malaysia.

Damon presented his Star Eagles at Italians and this was a good chance to test some things.

I presented Palaeo Diet. After I thought to write a supplement for it because I think that it is a great game.

Andrea write too many books so he presented a lot of things: Four Against Darkness, Sellswords, Song of Armies and Hordes. And maybe something more.

And these chaps are our super fans. They always buy all our books and they enjoy the games very much. Thanks!

Empoli Games 2017

Again in Empoli for one of the best historical wargame convention. Two days of wargame in September 2017.

Here our Ganesha Games big table with some books of ours. We showed Sellswords, Palaeo Diet and the upcoming fantasy big armies game.

Some pics about other things around. The tables quality is rising in these years.

And now a display of costly things in an unreal set, however a beautiful view.
